UAE Kitten Look beyond what you see...

UAE Kitten

Look beyond what you see...

There is a “Da3sooqa” in his book!

mood: Disturbed
craving: For the 'gayness' to go away

After a long, hectic & not-so-pleasant day at work, I came back home to continue part 2 of my day today by revising with my little nephew Saif his grade 1 Arabic for his exam tomorrow since my sister (his mum) is away. As soon as I opened his book, and went through the pages.. I was shocked!

First of all, of the difficulty of the content in the book for an average FIRST GRADER!! There was too much text, crammed into the most ‘tashkeel-ful’ paragraphs in the most mouthful terms..

Yes, this is one of the pages of the GRADE ONE Arabic book!! Already an eye sore for the young eyes! (X_x) No wonder the kids are hating school & especially Arabic class from the very beginning!

Second, the QUALITY of the actual content.. ALOT of inconsistency and flow of subjects and stories which immediately looses the child’s attention/interest.. There is “Badr” & “Bayan” instead of Saeed & Noora.. Tasteless stories about “ShuShu” the parrot & “Falfool” the elephant.. no wonder we have the X gender commonly increasing..

A7la shay in the cover they have “3am elhaweeya elwa6aneeya” misleading stamp for parents.. A7la wa6aneeya ray7a fil mishmish..

A highlight in the book is the story of “Faroo5″ the mojahed guy in another complicated & undigestable manner..

Just a reminder: we are talking about a GRADE ONE Arabic book.. little boys & girls of ages 5 & above exposed to such content & being ‘taught’ this stuff..

Then, we also have the case of irrelevant imagery coupled with meaningless words.. Like this case, for example.. try to connect the image of the giraffe & the pole on the other side with what the text is reading..

& another “no comment” picture in the book, again totally misplaced & put in the most irrelevant manners..

& just when you think this is the worst that it can get.. Akbar ehdaaa2 is the bug which is supposedly a “Da3sooqa” in God knows what language.. (& repeated in the book coz its such an important lesson)..

Allah yr7am ayaamna when Grade 1 Arabic was simple & very memorable.. ayaam (Labisat Hind 7ethaa2 ummha.. 7ethaa2 ummha kabeer…) =p & stories of Noora her little sister, and their bros Sa3eed & Ahmad?

Anyway, what I am trying to say is WHAT THE .. is going on!? This is supposed a certified by our Ministry of Education OFFICIAL Arabic book for our first graders!! Is this how our educational system is going down the drains? Is this what we expect our kids to grow up with? I am sure if they got child experts to see the presentation, quality and content of the book, they will say that this is a perfect example of what NOT to do for a child’s text book.

Very disappointing.. & BAD job for all the people who put the book together.. who sadly posted their names in the front page delusionally happy with their ‘achievement’..
I am sooo home-schooling my kids if this continues till that day comes..

On a happy note: Lets awwwl wish Saif good luck in his exam tomorrow (& lets hope none of the garbage sticks in his mind as he grows up).. =)

final whisper: I need to overcome it or I will never grow..

    hello.
I might be the only one who disagree with this . :P

but honestly, I don’t mind Arabic being hard for first grade while most Arabic Muslim people now a days are busy teaching their children “perfect” English…I remember one time I was in a public park. There was this little boy (maybe 3 years old) and his mother. Apparently they are locals. but she keeps talking to him in English… That makes me sad. it makes me sad that people forget about their mother language.

    Have a nice day.

  • If I started with the MoE I won’t stop, it seems like everyone around the UAE aren’t statisfied with what is being provided…

No Wonder I left the Education field and explored various other fields to find my lost soul =P

My last Comment would be: How do you expect an Arabic Book to be effecient when most of the people who were involved in creating it DO NOT SPEAK ARABIC Very well

There is a perfect episode from Freej about this problem loOl

  • Asoomah: Pardon me dear, it might not be my place to reply you, but your reply caught my attention…

The content of an Educational book should not be addressed and based on HOW much is crammed in the book !!!

It should be developed to suite the children of 4.5 - 6 years old could comprehend, understand in order be able to apply it in the social life..

Now what we see there,, isn’t something that could be easily comprehended and is not social related ( ya3ny couldn’t they have a Falcon or a Camel instead of an elephant and a chicken !!! )
If we want the kids to use Arabic more often in their life, we should teach them the Arabic that they will use :)

Pardon my Kitten am invading your blog =P — eHDaaaaa2

  • DS:

thank you kitten for mentioning this one out of a million problem with our lovely lovely MOE .. sometimes i think that i can do a way better job if it was up to me to make these books :S for God’s sake these are 5 yr. olds how in the world do they expect them to read that let alone understand it!! putting so much text and in that level of language just spells FAILURE all over it! what you’ve shown here is just some of what’s in one book. take a look at the almost 20 rest that they give out to each kid.yeah and they’re expected to haul them everyday to school and know what they’re doing.and people still are repulsed when a young local is speaking English instead of Arabic??at least the private schools do a slightly better job of teaching English.underline slightly because the public schools are a whole other problem ebkobrohom.and I’m not justifying it here, I’m just trying to express the fact that there is a HUGE problem in the way the system works and the text books are HORRIFIC in all ways without an exception i mean come on!!!we’re talking about EDUCATION which is one of the MOST important PILLARS that our nation depends on for it’s development!I am angry and really really frustrated with what we are seeing. The government is either totally underestimating this serious problem or is plain clueless which by this time isn’t not an option.
Allah y3eenak ya Saif, and every kid that has to go through that everyday.I wish home-schooling was an option here.Someone has to save them. :’( I’ll help.
Note to MOE:you keep f@#$ing it up every time you change the books. It’s not about the quantity it’s about the quality.Whatever you’re doing, it AIN’T working so PLEASE i beg you to get a REAL person to be in charge of it, PLEASE.

  • if i go back to grade 1 i am sure i wont pass lol.. its the first time i heard of something called da3sooqa lol…. thanks kitten n god bless our kids..

    November 12, 2008
  • looool… shar el balyati ma yo’97ik…. my lil bro is going thru this trama too, i also hope nothing of this sticks in his head as he grows up, what type of education is this?… sigh….

& just a food for thought, when many, many are against this and they show their ‘estya2′ to a lot of the MoE’s books context, material and decisions, y is there never any action done in the real ‘battle’ field?

and keep in mind we are loosing valuable stakes, our kids. who grow up with mix thoughts or wrong ones… its scary i must say….

    p.s: “A7la wa6aneeya ray7a fil mishmish..” very true, very heartbreaking. ~ sigh.

  • Asoomah: what good is giving kids hard Arabic, not so related to what they see and use in real life? they will just hate it more… what good is that?? start easy, not too easy, simple and relative… start fun and alluring for those young eager minds….

  • Asoomah:

    Hi MYTH.Graphy,

well, yes I agree that the content of the book isn’t the best and IMO, thats the only problem. My sister is 2nd grade now and she had the same books. mashallah she didn’t have any problem with Arabic that time. and I was the one teaching her. However, I’ve noticed that the contact was rather corny sometimes. but she didn’t face any difficulties with the Arabic it self :)

    again, Pardon us Kitten, and I hope you don’t mind that I have a different opinion. ^_^;

    have a nice day.

Good post Kitten! Enlightening & very true, however please don’t be offended but I was truly shocked that alot of people didn’t know a lady bug is a da3sooqa lol !
We are “Ummat Iqra”, so why should we restrict our children to the books they read in school! True we are facing a problem, but each of us has the solution in his/her hands.
In the very end it’s every parent’s resposibility to be able to direct his child to love his mother tongue, the tools are all out there. I visit Jareer every month and I have found many beautifully illustarted simple books for children in Arabic about il Akhlaag, 9elat il Ra7im, Al Athkaar etc. There are even really good simple books about Qawa3id with pictures that I wish we had in mar7elatna il ibtida2eya ^_^

I cannot understand how lightly ppl at the ministry of education take this matter!!! This is the method of where students will learn proper Arabic..their MOTHER TONGUE How could they do it in such a weak unprofessional manner?!

I don’t mean to make it silly and easy but I mean make it in a way that a child would understand and comprehend .. And whats with the silly images?!! We’re in 2008 and the UAE is full of talented graphic designers and artists that could definitely do a better job.. and maybe for free too..

Mub 3eeb that the government wouldn’t mind bringing international consultants and experts for tiniest reason but not do so for the future of their young generation ?? !! walla thats because it’s not an income generating sector?

Ya3ni if parents, brothers & sisters won’t speak up.. who will?

EVERYDAY on the radio they complain about everything but no one mentions this..
